Genre, Sub-genre & Target Audience

A genre is a category of any type of written or spoken form , audio or visual (e.g. film, music, literature etc.) of something characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter ( e.g. comedy, hip-hop, romance, action, classical).
A sub-genre is a subcategory within a particular genre category which is different to the main genre form, style or subject matter.

An example of this in the work I have been doing is the film poster of ‘The Others’.
Here is the trailer of the film staring Nicole Kidman.

The genre of the film is Thriller and the subgenre is Supernatural Thriller.
The signifiers of this seen in the poster are

Another example of genre, subgenre and audience signifiers from theatrical posters is the poster of the film ‘In Time’. In Time was released in October 2011. It stars Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried. The film was written, produced and written by Andrew Niccol.

The genre would be Action and he Sub genre would be Action Romance & Sci-Fi.
The target audience would be a younger age target audience for both males and females because the action is most probably attract males and the romance as well as the use of the actor / singer Justin Timberlake will attract females. The will be around the ages of 15 – to around early 30’s.

The key signifiers from the theatrical poster are the gun for action because it’s linked to shooting and fighting. The positioning of the characters and how they are looking at each other signifies romance and the use of the colour green in the text signifies sci-fi because the colour green is linked / represents the future and futuristic things.

Here is an example of signifiers of the genre, sub genre and target audience from the film poster of ‘Tower Heist’.

The genre is Comedy and the sub genre is Comedy Action. The target audience would be family. The main signifiers of this from the poster will be the two key actors standing in font of the other actors which are Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy (who also has the biggest name billing at the top of the poster). This is because these actors are known best for their comedy genre films and there target audiences being families. Another signifier for the genre of action is the way the words are being slanted, the skyline and the gun being held by a lady which are associated with action. Also the word ‘Heist’ and the actors standing on top of the building shouts action to the audience.
