Intertextuality

Intertextuality is a term that describes the using of one film to shape the meaning of another. This is done alot in films, films basically  borrow from each other using aspects of sound, mise en scene, camera work and editing that viewers have already familiarized with, therefore enabling viewers to recognise these aspects.

Here are a few examples of intertextuality:

Without people familarizing with movies starring Bruce Lee and his yellow and black tracksuit, kill bill would not have been able to portray the kind of meaning they wanted to, in terms of Kombat and Martial Arts.

Scary Movie is full of intertextuality, it uses familiar aspects from films to create comedy. Here is a killer named Ghostface in action in the movie Scream.

Through these videos we can depict how intertextuality is used to created meaning in films.

To ensure our thriller is a success we could use aspects that viewers are familiar with so its easier for them to understand, but we could also do the opposite establishing our own meanings and ideas. As for now we are not sure, only time will tell.
